A truck tire changer operates using a combination of hydraulic and pneumatic power to safely and efficiently mount and dismount tires from their rims. The main components and their functions include:

• Hydraulically Operated Clamping Chuck: This is the central part of the machine where the wheel is secured. It typically features a self-centering four-jaw chuck that can clamp the wheel from either the inside or outside of the rim. The hydraulic system provides the immense power needed to hold the heavy wheel assembly firmly in place.

• Bead Breaker: The bead breaker is a powerful tool, often a disc or roller, that uses hydraulic force to break the seal between the tire bead and the wheel rim. This is a critical first step, as truck tire beads are very stiff and require considerable force to loosen.

• Mount/Demount Tool: This tool, often a combination of a disc and a hook, is what actually separates the tire from the rim and then helps guide the new tire onto the rim. It is mounted on a carriage or arm that can be moved and positioned precisely using hydraulic controls.

• Control Console: Unlike car tire changers which may have foot pedals, many truck tire changers feature a mobile or fixed control console. This allows the operator to safely monitor and control all the hydraulic and rotational functions from a safe distance, reducing the risk of injury.

• Hydraulic Pump and Motor: These powerful components provide the necessary force for all the machines operations, including clamping the wheel, breaking the bead, and positioning the mount/demount arm.

• Air Pressure System: An on-board or external air compressor provides the compressed air needed to inflate the newly mounted tire. Some machines have "bead blaster" features that deliver a quick, high-volume burst of air to help seat the tire beads
